Átash Ábi

Átash Ábi is a musical project that bridges worlds, blending the intensity of fire (Átash) with the fluidity of water (Ábi). Led by Bay Area-based sitarist and composer Sasha Bayan, the band explores the beauty of contrasts and opposites—musically and personally. His journey bridges formal conservatory training in classical guitar and composition with an immersive study of Indian classical music in India, blending traditions in unexpected and evocative ways.

The name Átash Ábi nods to Sasha’s Persian roots while reflecting the question at the heart of the project: what does it mean to be of one heritage while being steeped in the traditions of others? Teaming up with some of the leading voices in the new guard of Chicago’s jazz scene, Sasha and the band craft a sound that moves seamlessly between composition, improvisation, and discovery.

Átash Ábi is currently working on its debut twin albums, Átash and Ábi, which capture the dynamic energies at the heart of their sound. It’s a celebration of contrasts, showing how fire and water, tradition and innovation, can dance together in harmony.
